A Nautical Table

By Sheldon Landwehr

Torontoians will put up with anything for good lobsters.  They will wait in line.  They will crawl into small, nautically festooned rustic booths squeezed together.  They will pay upscale prices and not mind having their flatware handed to them in a bundle and their platters slapped down on the table.  In fact, they love the hassle, at least at the four decade old Lobster Trap.  Outsiders might not understand what's so special.  But after all is said and done, the chowder and lobster bisque are among the best versions around.  The menu, basically devoted to serving sweet, plump cold water specimens pulled from Nova Scotia seas range in size from one to predominately four hefty pounds.

At the Lobster Trap you can start off eating oysters on the half shell, steamed mussels mariniere, man-sized shrimp cocktails, and traditionally prepared hot buttered, garlicky escargots, and richly coated coconut shrimp. A downside offering was the basket of disappointingly  pedestrian garlic rolls.

In addition to broiled or steamed lobster accompanied by drawn butter, you can order king crab legs, sautéed Atlantic salmon, orange roughy, halibut, garlic shrimp, Caribbean lobster tails, rack of New Zealand lamb, steak and chicken.

The Lobster Trap bill-of-fare is nicely rounded off with a tempting variety of  sweet things as well as a suitable wine list, brews and other beverages.  For family outings a diverse children's menu is likewise on hand, along with snappy, brisk service.

So when you want to show visitors Toronto's seafood cuisine, the Lobster Trap is the place to show it.
